Individual treatment: the right laser eye method?!

What seemed unthinkable just a few decades ago is now part of everyday life at Smartlaser: safe, affordable correction of vision defects of all kinds. The technology and medicine behind laser eye surgery has developed rapidly.

1987 the first PRK operation. 1989 the first LASIK operation. 2004 the first Femto-LASIK operation. ReLEx smile and Trans-PRK have been available for some time now…

Almost every type of visual defect can now be corrected by laser eye surgery. We particularly frequently treat patients with:

– Presbyopia (deterioration of vision at close range)
– Myopia
– Hyperopia
– Astigmatism (astigmatism due to curvature of the cornea)

At Smartlaser Vienna, we particularly often rely on the modern advancements of proven methods: Trans PRK! Other methods can be realized in the Smartlaser mother clinic “Eyelaser”…

When is which treatment suitable?

You are probably wondering how you can find out which laser eye surgery method is best suited to you and your visual impairment? The answer might sober you up: it depends!

Whether the Femto-LASIK or Trans PRK method is more promising for you depends on various individual factors and must be decided by an experienced doctor. The decisive factor is:

– What type of vision defect should be corrected?
– How severely is your vision impaired?
– Is your cornea particularly thin or curved?
– Are there any other special features to consider regarding your eyes?

Since the selection of the appropriate treatment method lays the decisive foundation for a successful laser eye surgery, a detailed preliminary examination by experienced experts is essential!

Eye laser methods

Trans PRK

The modern Trans PRK method is characterized by the fact that it works “without touching” the eye. The surface of the cornea (epithelium) is ablated by a high-precision laser. The laser then corrects the curvature that is responsible for your defective vision. Due to the high precision of this method, healing can be expected to be rapid. The epithelium can grow back after just three days.

LASIK

In the tried and tested LASIK eye laser method, the surface of the cornea is not removed, but folded back after an incision with a scalpel. The cornea is then corrected using an excimer laser. The flap is then folded back onto the treated cornea. The flap grows back completely after the procedure. The actual operation only takes a few minutes.

PRK

The PRK method is similar to Trans PRK in that the uppermost layer of cornea is also completely removed. However, this is removed manually using a scalpel or a plane. As soon as the cornea is exposed, the defective vision is corrected by laser. The epithelium must grow back in the days following the procedure. This method has been used successfully for decades.

Femto-Lasik

Femto-LASIK is a further development of the “LASIK method”. Here too, the corneal surface is folded down in order to subsequently correct the defective vision. The decisive difference is that the folding of the flap is not made possible by mechanical action. A special femtosecond laser removes the top layer with high precision and without direct contact. Finally, the epithelium is simply folded back.

The laser then corrects the curvature that is responsible for your defective vision. Due to the high precision of this method, healing can be expected to be rapid.
