Why So Many Are Considering Bratislava
About 80 kilometers, roughly an hour by car, good train connections—Bratislava is practically a suburb of Vienna. Add to that offers that, at first glance, seem significantly cheaper than what people are used to in Austria.
This is an understandable line of thinking, and it isn’t wrong per se. Laser eye surgery in Slovakia is no less advanced than in Austria, and there are reputable clinics there. The issues that make the difference are different—and they don’t concern the procedure itself, but everything surrounding it.
Laser surgery isn’t a day trip
The procedure takes about 30 minutes. The treatment lasts three months.
This is the point that is most often overlooked during planning. After laser correction, several follow-up visits are required, and they are not optional—they are crucial for detecting complications in a timely manner.
First Session
About 60 minutes of diagnostics. Only then can we determine whether treatment is possible and, if so, what kind.
Second trip
After the procedure, you’re not allowed to drive yourself. You’ll need someone to accompany you or stay overnight.
Third Trip
First follow-up visit. If you had a surface treatment, the bandage lens will still be in place at this time.
Fourth visit
The bandage is removed, and the healing process is checked.
Fifth and sixth visits
Follow-up examinations. Only now is the final result determined.
That’s six appointments over three months. If you’re receiving treatment in Bratislava, each one involves about a two-hour drive plus waiting time—and at least two of them will fall during a period when your vision isn’t good. Be sure to factor in vacation days or compensatory time off before comparing offers.
Important to know: If something goes wrong after you return—an irritated eye, sudden deterioration in vision—the clinic where you received treatment is an hour’s drive away. That’s doable on a Tuesday morning but not on a Sunday evening.
Six Questions You Should Ask Every Clinic
In Bratislava as well as in Vienna. A provider that answers them is a reputable choice—regardless of which country it’s based in.
- What guidelines are followed during surgery? In German-speaking countries, the KRC recommendations from the DOG and BVA serve as the standard. They specify, for each procedure, the maximum diopter range for which it is suitable—and at what point one is operating in a borderline range.
- What is used to create the flap? A femtosecond laser or a mechanical microkeratome? Both methods may be referred to as LASIK. The KRC requires an additional 20 μm of corneal thickness for mechanical incisions.
- Who specifically performs the surgery, and how many of these procedures do they perform per year? Not: how many the clinic performs.
- What is the total cost of the package? This includes the initial examination, the procedure, all follow-up visits, medications, and any potential follow-up correction. Not just the price per eye.
- How many follow-up visits are included, and how much does each additional one cost?
- Which jurisdiction applies in the event of a dispute, and in which language are the documents? A consent form that you do not fully understand is not a valid consent form.
Regarding Point 6: In the event of a dispute involving treatment received abroad, the law of the country where the treatment took place generally applies. This does not rule out any possibilities, but it does make enforcement more complicated. Ask in advance rather than finding out when it really matters.
