How does Femto-LASIK work?
The Femto-LASIK method is a further development of the classic LASIK treatment.
The cornea is cut and folded down (“flap”) using a so-called femtosecond laser.
The cut is extremely fine and precise.
The excimer laser then corrects the visual defect – similar to the Trans PRK method.
Femto-LASIK also does not require the use of a scalpel, which significantly minimizes the risk.
After the correction, the layer of cornea that has been removed is reattached so that it can grow back.
Areas of application and limitations of the Femto-LASIK method: The Femto-LASIK method can be used to correct all forms of defective vision.
This laser eye surgery method is regularly used for the following values: – for short-sightedness: -8 dpt – for astigmatism: 5 dpt – for long-sightedness: 4 dpt However, the Femto-LASIK method also has its limits, beyond which other laser eye procedures are more suitable: – Short-sightedness: maximum -10 dpt – Astigmatism: maximum 6 dpt – Long-sightedness: maximum 4 dpt If you practice contact or water sports, Femto-LASIK is not the optimal treatment method.
The same applies if you are intolerant to contact lenses.
Advantages of Femto-LASIK
– Only one incision necessary without having to use a blade – Low-pain, established and safe laser eye surgery – Generally very good visual results – Immediate WOW effect after the operation – Fast healing process and high level of comfort
Procedure and healing process with Femto-LASIK
Laser eye surgery using the Femto-LASIK method usually only takes a few minutes per eye and is painless for you.
The basis for a smooth Femto-LASIK treatment is a careful preliminary examination at Smartlaser.
The surgical procedure can be divided into four steps:
Femto-LASIK preparation:
- Cleaning and disinfecting the face for hygienic conditions
- Fix the eyelids to prevent blinking during the operation
- Anesthesia of the eyes with special eye drops (no pain)
- Fix the green light with your gaze so that the laser can position itself optimally.
"Flap" incision by femtosecond laser
- Use of the femtosecond laser
- Thin incision through the uppermost corneal layer (0.1 mm thick “flap”)
- The flap is carefully folded over to expose the cornea
- Preparation for the use of the excimer laser
Correction of the cornea
- The excimer laser is aligned and begins the correction (usually takes a few seconds)
- The laser is controlled with incredible precision by a computer
- Surgeon constantly monitors the laser with a microscope
- Here, too, the patient does not experience any pain
Completion of the Femto-LASIK procedure
- As soon as the cornea has been corrected, the “flap” is folded back
- “Flap” immediately fits tightly and forms a natural protective layer
- Special protective lens is used
- The Femto-LASIK operation is complete
Completion of the Femto-LASIK procedure
Thanks to the fine incision, the eye can heal very quickly after Femto-LASIK treatment.
The cornea and the “flap” heal quickly and pain usually only occurs up to 5 hours after the laser eye surgery.
After 1-2 days, your eyes are completely healed and you can enjoy full vision.
To support the healing process and alleviate your pain, we will fit you with a protective lens after the operation.
