The most suitable laser eye surgery procedure for your individual needs

Although just a few decades ago it seemed like a distant dream, safe and affordable laser correction of all kinds of visual defects is now a reality here at SmartLaser. The technology and medical expertise behind laser eye surgery have advanced remarkably in recent years.

The first PRK operation was performed in 1987. The first LASIK operation was performed in 1989. The first Femto-LASIK operation was performed in 2004. ReLEx SMILE and Trans-PRK have both been around for quite some time now, too…

Now almost every type of visual defect can be corrected by laser eye surgery procedure. We often treat patients with:

• Presbyopia (reduced ability to focus on near objects)
• Myopia (near-sightedness)
• Hyperopia (far-sightedness)
• Astigmatism (caused by irregular curvature of the cornea)

At SmartLaser Vienna, we tend to opt for the tried and tested Trans-PRK method! Other procedures can be performed at EyeLaser, our parent clinic.

When is each treatment most suitable?

Are you wondering how you can find out which laser eye surgery method is most suitable for you and your visual impairment? This answer might not be what you were hoping to hear, but it really depends!

An experienced doctor must decide whether the Femto-LASIK or the Trans-PRK procedure is a more viable option for you, as this is dependent on a number of different factors. Important factors to consider:

• What type of visual defect needs to be corrected?
• How badly does it affect your eyesight?
• Is your cornea particularly thin or curved?
• Are there any other particular details about your eyes that need to be taken into consideration?

As choosing the most appropriate treatment method lays the foundation for a successful laser eye surgery, it is essential for an experienced expert to carry out a thorough initial consultation.

Laser eye surgery methods

Trans PRK

The modern Trans-PRK method is distinguished by its ‘no-touch’ treatment of the eye. The outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) is removed using a high-precision laser. The laser then corrects the curvature that is causing your visual defect. The high level of precision of this method ensures a fast healing process. The epithelium can regenerate in as little as three days.

LASIK

During the tried and tested LASIK method, the outer layer of the cornea is not removed; instead, an incision is made with a scalpel to form a flap, which is then folded back. The cornea is then corrected using an excimer laser. Next, the flap is laid back into place on top of the treated cornea. The flap will fully repair itself after the procedure. The operation only takes a couple of minutes from start to finish.

PRK

The PRK method is similar to the Trans-PRK method in the sense that it also involves completely removing the outermost layer of the cornea. However, in this case it is removed manually with a scalpel or microkeratome. Once the cornea is exposed, the laser corrects the visual defect. In the days following the procedure, the epithelium regenerates. This method has been used successfully for decades.

Femto-Lasik

Femto-LASIK is a development of the ‘LASIK method’. This method also involves folding back the corneal surface in order to correct the visual defect. The crucial difference is that the flap is not folded back mechanically. Instead, a special, high-precision femtosecond laser is used to remove the uppermost layer without direct contact. Finally, the epithelium can simply be laid back into place.
